As is often the case in Hawthorne, this site was restricted by The Residential Design section of the Character Code meaning that the façade needed to compliment some character elements by use of traditional building materials or use of contemporary materials with traditional character applications.

The brief from our client was for a modern approach both externally and internally, the external part of the brief was a challenge due the DCP zoning of the site however we managed to obtain the Development Approval (DA) with a very creative Town Planning application.

The focal point of the home was the breathtaking city and river views which were optimised by what we term as “upside down living”, that is by designing the home with the main living upstairs. We are often presented with these types of sites and our experience in advising clients on how to best design a home for these unique areas is invaluable, for example it can be over looked how critical a connection to the pool and yard is, with “upside down living” we strongly encourage a kitchenette or outdoor kitchen to allow relaxing summer days around the pool or in the yard with the kids – an option that can often be overlooked on these types of sites.
